The only good news from Austin’s appointment at Stanford today is that we have 3 weeks until his next appointment.
Austin weighed in at 11 pounds 13 oz, meaning he gained no weight whatsoever in the past week and only 2 ounces in the past two weeks. His whole CF team was so surprised and puzzled by his lack of weight gain even after adding three 24 calorie/ounce bottles a day (regular breast milk has 20 calories/ounce).
They upped the calories of his formula bottles to 26 calories/ounce and told us to give him an extra enzyme capsule with these bottles. We will also be giving him the second half of his Prevacid tablet at night.
We officially have three weeks to get Austin to gain a significant amount of weight to satisfy his doctors. If he doesn’t, he will be immediately admitted to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital for some tests for the PH levels of his stomach, possibly some nose-tube feedings and for a G-tube consult (stomach feeding tube). I am unsure if the tube will be put in that day or not, as I believe it is a legitimate surgical procedure. If that is the case, we will spend a couple days in the hospital.
I am really hoping that this is not the case. I’ve been trying so hard to get him to fatten up, but it just hasn’t been happening lately. I always knew there was a small possibility of this happening, but I can’t believe we are already to this point, the point where he NEEDS to gain weight or he WILL get a G-tube.
It won’t be the worst thing in the world I guess because it will for sure help him gain the weight he needs to gain, but I really hope that it is something we can avoid all together.
Pray for the little man to gain weight
