Update from last CF Clinic Visit

Sorry for the long delay for this update.  As many of you know, Austin had a 102-104.7 degree fever for about three days last week.  He kept me pretty busy those few days.  Anyways, on October 21, Austin had his clinic appointment at Stanford.  He weighed 16 lbs 9 oz and was around the 24th percentile for weight (moved up from 18th percentile a month earlier).  His BMI jumped up from the 1st percentile to the 7th percentile in just one month!  Coconut oil has surely been a very good thing for Austin.  His arms seem to finally be keeping some meat on them.  His legs have a little “chunk” to them, but still no rolls haha.

At the end of Austin’s appointment, we were told that we won’t need to go back for two whole months.  CF patients, regardless of age, are usually seen 4 times a year if they are doing well.  If all goes well this winter, Austin will finally be seen every 3 months!  I can’t wait for that!  It seems like just yesterday Tyler, Austin and I were at UCSF every week or two.

Other highlights from his last clinic appointment include Austin getting his first flu shot and getting his blood drawn to check for vitamin levels.  It was sooooo sad holding him down so the nurses could find a vein and poke him with this tiny needle.  He was such a little trooper and was smiling just a couple minutes later with his arm all wrapped up.

The doctors also did another throat culture to see if he is growing anything nasty in his lungs.  I am assuming that it was all clear and normal again because they have not called me to start him on antibiotics.  This will be the 3rd or 4th culture in a row that has been perfectly normal!  When he was younger, he cultured staph several times and had to go on 3 rounds of antibiotics, but we haven’t had any problems with that since late July!

I do not know what I am going to do with myself without doctors appointments and weight checks every two to three weeks!  His next appointment at Stanford is December 16th and his next pediatrician appointment is when he is a little over 9 months old, since Austin no longer needs weight checks!

Halloween is just 2 days away and I can’t wait to see the little man in his monkey costume as “Curious George” and Tyler as “The Man with the Yellow Hat.”  I have no idea what I am going to be!!! Maybe Dr. Wiseman from the show.

I will definitely post some pictures from Halloween ASAP!
